Olympiacos FC have officially appointed Antonio Cordón as their new sports director, completing his return to the Greek club on Thursday, September 10. The 62-year-old Spanish executive replaces Darko Kovačević in the role as part of a wider restructuring of the club's management.
The agreement between the Piraeus club and Cordón had been settled for several days before being formalised by an official announcement. In its statement, Olympiacos FC announced the start of its collaboration with Antonio Cordón, who will assume the duties of sports director at the club.
The return of Cordón coincides with a major overhaul of the technical staff for the team. Olympiacos have also replaced head coach José Luis Mendilibar with fellow Spanish manager Imanol Alguacil as part of a fresh start for the organization.
Previous tenure at Olympiacos
This decision marks a second stint in Greece for Cordón, who previously served in the same role for the club between December 2023 and July 2024. The experienced administrator departs and returns after having overseen football operations during that seven-month period.
Before his initial spell with the Greek club, Cordón built an extensive reputation across European football through executive positions at several prominent teams. His career includes senior management roles at Spanish sides Villarreal and Real Betis, as well as French club Monaco.
Executive restructuring in Piraeus
Cordón replaces outgoing sports director Kovačević, the former Serbian international striker who previously played for Olympiacos before moving into the club's executive structure. The managerial change on the bench also sees Mendilibar step aside after guiding the first team, making way for former Real Sociedad coach Alguacil.
Olympiacos, based in the port city of Piraeus near Athens, are the most successful club in Greek football history. The club will now look to establish stability under their renewed Spanish sports management team following the official confirmation on Thursday.
