Parla Mayor Ramón Jurado faced sharp criticism from opposition politicians after attending a diplomatic reception at the Moroccan Embassy in Madrid on July 30 while a major migration crisis unfolded in Ceuta.
The local People's Party noted that Jurado issued no public statement of concern or condemnation regarding the mass irregular entry into Ceuta on the day of the event, choosing instead to participate in the diplomatic celebration.
The opposition also questioned the presence of Parla Local Police chief Eduardo Fernández Tejero, who appeared in civilian clothes alongside Jurado in photographs published on the official X account of the Moroccan Embassy.
People's Party representatives stated that it remains unclear whether Fernández Tejero attended as an escort for the mayor, as a member of an official municipal delegation, or in another capacity.
Ceuta Border Crisis and Embassy Visit
The diplomatic event took place on July 30 to celebrate Throne Day, an official Moroccan national holiday commemorating the throne ascension of King Mohammed VI. On the exact same day, the Spanish enclave of Ceuta faced a mass irregular entry of people arriving from Morocco, requiring the deployment of a major security operation.
Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city situated on the North African coast sharing a land border with Morocco, making border control a prominent national issue in Spain. Parla is a municipality located south of Madrid with a municipal government led by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
Security and irregular immigration are frequent topics of political debate in Parla, where opposition councilors have repeatedly called for stronger measures against crime while Jurado's socialist administration has rejected their assessments.

The contrast between Jurado's silence on July 30 and his actions the following day further intensified political friction in the municipality. On July 31, after the local People's Party shared a video on social media depicting the irregular border crossings in Ceuta, the mayor launched a harsh verbal attack against the conservative opposition.
Jurado described the local People's Party members as fascists and characterised their political stance on the border situation as repugnant and miserable.
Opposition members argued that the mayor remained silent about the border emergency while attending the embassy event, only to attack critics when they raised concerns over security. The opposition continues to demand formal explanations regarding the reasons for the presence of both Jurado and the police chief at the embassy function.
