Peru's under-17 women's volleyball team defeated the Czech Republic 3-2 at the U17 Volleyball World Championship in Santiago, Chile, on Saturday, August 15.
The five-set victory in the 13th-to-16th placement bracket allows Peru to advance to the 13th-place playoff match scheduled for Sunday, August 16. Peru will face the winner of the playoff encounter between Venezuela and the Philippines.
The match in Santiago saw Peru take an early lead by winning the opening set 25-18. The Czech Republic responded by taking the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-20, putting Peru behind in the contest.
Peru rallied in the fourth set, winning 25-17 to force a deciding fifth set. In the final set, Peru closed out the victory with a 15-10 score line to take the match 3-2.
Five set match breakdown
The set scores finished 25-18, 19-25, 20-25, 25-17, and 15-10 in favor of Peru, making a total set score of 3-2. In international volleyball, matches follow a best-of-five format where the first four sets are played to 25 points and a tie-breaking fifth set is played to 15 points.
Peru entered Saturday's fixture following a narrow 3-2 defeat against Argentina in the 9th-to-16th classification stage.
That earlier loss to Argentina placed Peru into the bracket competing for 13th through 16th positions at the international tournament.

Peru's campaign in Chile began in the group stage, where the team earned three wins and suffered two losses. Peru defeated Tunisia 3-0, lost 1-3 to Venezuela, beat Mexico 3-2, defeated the Philippines 3-1, and fell 0-3 to China.
Advancing to the round of 16, Peru was eliminated from main championship contention after losing 0-3 to Italy.
Saturday's match began at 10:00 a.m. Peruvian time, corresponding to 9:00 a.m. in Mexico, 10:00 a.m. in Colombia and Ecuador, 11:00 a.m. in Bolivia, Chile, and Venezuela, 12:00 p.m. in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, and 5:00 p.m. in Spain.
