Russian forces suffered 1,400 casualties over the past day, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on October 27.
The latest daily count, published in a morning update, brings total Russian military losses to approximately 1,581,840 personnel since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainian General Staff issues daily operational summaries tracking estimated enemy troop and equipment losses across the frontline.

Ukrainian military commanders reported that Russian forces also sustained heavy material losses over the same 24-hour window. Ukrainian units destroyed or disabled 21 Russian artillery systems, two multiple launch rocket systems, and one air defence installation during the preceding day.
The daily assessment also recorded the loss of 1,794 operational-tactical unmanned aerial vehicles, seven ground-based robotic combat systems, 232 military transport trucks and fuel tankers, and one unit of specialised engineering equipment.
Ukrainian tally of Russian equipment losses
Alongside its personnel figures, the General Staff released an updated summary of cumulative Russian equipment losses since the conflict escalated in February 2022. According to the data, Russian forces have lost 12,448 tanks and 25,609 armoured combat vehicles during the fighting.
The Ukrainian command further recorded 51,653 artillery systems, 2,241 multiple launch rocket systems, and 1,727 air defence systems destroyed or damaged. Losses in the air and at sea include 449 military aeroplanes, 356 helicopters, 5,138 cruise missiles, 35 warships and boats, and two submarines.
Cumulative battlefield equipment losses documented by Kyiv also comprise 584,252 operational-tactical drones, 3,025 ground robotic platforms, 167,472 automotive vehicles and fuel tankers, and 4,859 pieces of special equipment, which includes engineering and recovery vehicles.

Independent estimates of Russian casualties
Russia does not publicly disclose official casualty statistics for its armed forces. Moscow last acknowledged a military death toll in September 2022, when Russian defence authorities stated that 5,937 soldiers had died in Ukraine.
Independent casualty investigations indicate that actual Russian fatalities far exceed official historical claims. A joint research project by the BBC Russian Service and the independent Russian news outlet Mediazona established on October 9 that at least 276,113 Russian soldiers have been killed on the front line since the 2022 invasion began.
The BBC and Mediazona tally includes only individual deaths confirmed through public records, such as regional obituaries, social media tributes from family members, and cemetery photographs. More than 7,800 of the confirmed fatalities were officers serving in the Russian army and other state security branches. The project researchers noted that the true death toll is likely much higher because many battlefield deaths leave no public paper trail, while NATO estimates suggest total Russian casualties could reach up to 500,000.
Ukrainian casualties and independent studies
Ukrainian authorities also declined to publish casualty numbers for much of the conflict, stating that comprehensive loss data would remain classified until the war concluded. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has periodically shared casualty estimates.
During an interview with Fox News broadcast on July 30, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine had lost 50,000 soldiers, while approximately 400,000 service members had been wounded. The Ukrainian president added that a significant number of military personnel remained missing in action.
Independent research shows that the human cost across both militaries has reached levels unseen in Europe since the Second World War. A study published on July 1 by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, an American research organisation, concluded that combined Russian and Ukrainian military casualties, including both killed and wounded personnel, had surpassed two million since the full-scale Russian invasion commenced in February 2022.
