Russia strikes Ukraine: Two killed in Kyiv missile attack

Russian missile and drone strikes killed two people in Kyiv overnight as heavy bombardment hit targets across several Ukrainian regions on October 7.

The Ukrainian capital came under attack from two waves of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and long-range drones launched in the early hours of the morning. Officials from the Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed that two people died in the Darnytskyi district, where debris ignited fires on open ground and damaged a garage cooperative.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, reported widespread damage across multiple districts. Hits on non-residential developments were recorded in the Obolonskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, while a warehouse facility was struck in the Podilskyi district. Klitschko said the strike in Podilskyi caused a fire and partially destroyed the ceiling of an office and warehouse building.

Kyiv, the nation's capital and largest urban center, has faced repeated long-range aerial bombardment aimed at municipal infrastructure, residential neighborhoods and commercial supply chains throughout the conflict.

Ukrainian air defense authorities said the attack involved ballistic missiles fired in two distinct waves, occurring around 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Air defense alerts warned of incoming threats targeting Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro, with local monitors reporting explosions in all three locations.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., the Air Force tracked the takeoff of six Tu-95 strategic bombers from the Olenegorsk airfield in northern Russia. Cruise missiles launched by the aircraft entered Ukrainian airspace around 6:00 a.m.

The Tupolev Tu-95 is a heavy long-range bomber capable of firing standoff cruise missiles hundreds of miles from target areas. Russia regularly stages strategic aviation flights from northern military installations such as Olenegorsk, situated in the Murmansk region above the Arctic Circle.

Poltava Oblast in central Ukraine was hit by a heavy missile and drone barrage later in the morning. Vitaliy Dyakivnych, head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, confirmed that explosions shook the city of Kremenchuk after a Russian missile struck a residential district.

Dyakivnych said the missile strike damaged apartment buildings in Kremenchuk, prompting emergency response teams to deploy to the scene. He added that Russian forces also hit an industrial enterprise in the Kremenchuk district, with casualty figures remaining under investigation.

Kremenchuk is a major industrial city on the Dnieper River in central Ukraine's Poltava Oblast, known for its transport infrastructure and manufacturing facilities.

In neighboring Kirovohrad Oblast, an enterprise was hit during the morning assault. Andriy Raykovych, head of the Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, reported that one person was injured according to preliminary information.

Russian strikes also targeted critical facilities across southern and central Ukraine. Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, said an industrial enterprise in Dnipro was struck, while an attack in Zaporizhzhia damaged a transport infrastructure facility. Authorities in Zaporizhzhia warned residents that traffic could be temporarily restricted on certain road sections due to the damage.

Dnipro is a key manufacturing and logistics hub in central Ukraine, while Zaporizhzhia serves as a vital administrative and transport center near the southern front lines.

Widespread strikes across southern cities

The overnight bombardment followed multiple Russian strikes across southern and central Ukraine on October 6. In Odesa Oblast, Russian forces struck a highway, damaging commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. Five people were injured in the strike, with two requiring hospitalization.

Russian forces also attacked a medical facility in Kryvyi Rih on October 6. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city defense council, reported that two Banderol weapons struck a hospital in the city center, injuring three people including a hospital employee who was listed in serious condition.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian strikes hit a city bridge on October 6, forcing authorities to temporarily close the crossing to vehicular traffic. Two men, aged 43 and 54, were injured in the attack.
