Spain has recorded the highest life expectancy in the European Union, with citizens living an average of over 83 years, according to a demographic report published by the European Commission. The figure places Spain clearly above the continental average of around 81.5 years. Data indicates that lifestyle, customs, and deep-rooted habits in Spain may be positively influencing the longevity of the population.

According to data from Eurostat, only four European regions exceeded an average life expectancy of 85 years in 2024. The Community of Madrid held the top position in Europe with an average of 85.7 years. Alongside Madrid, the regions of Trento, Bolzano, and Stockholm also surpassed the threshold, each recording an average life expectancy of 85 years.
Factors driving longevity in Spain
Experts state that no single reason explains Spain's leadership in longevity, but rather a combination of multiple factors. Key contributors include a diet based on the Mediterranean diet, the quality of the public healthcare system, social cohesion, and a lifestyle that encourages spending more time outdoors.
Daily activities such as frequent walking or remaining active during routine tasks can have a positive impact on health, even without engaging in intense physical exercise. Conversely, countries with the lowest longevity records display factors that negatively affect health, including higher tobacco consumption, less balanced diets, and healthcare systems that are still in development.
Daily habits linked to longer life
Daily movement serves as a fundamental pillar of health care. Specialists emphasize that it is important not only to practice physical exercise, but also to incorporate small daily habits such as walking, climbing stairs, or participating in outdoor activities.
Quality rest and an adequate sleep routine allow the organism to recover and regenerate. A lack of sufficient rest is linked to a higher risk of developing health problems such as dementia.
The Mediterranean diet stands out among the most beneficial nutritional models for the body. Its foundation consists of fruits, vegetables, quality proteins, healthy fats, and fiber, while reducing the excessive consumption of sugar and ultra-processed products.
Specialists note that limiting harmful substances is key to preventing disease. Both excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco use increase the risk of suffering various health problems.
Visiting healthcare professionals when necessary and complying with recommended medical controls allows for early detection of issues and better management of chronic diseases. Additionally, studies have linked an optimistic view of life to a lower risk of heart disease, noting that people with positive attitudes often develop healthier habits.
Longevity depends not only on living more years, but also on living them with quality. Loneliness and isolation can negatively affect physical and mental health, while maintaining social ties promotes well-being and happiness.
