Hollywood actor Tom Cruise will attend the world premiere of his new dark comedy Digger in London on September 22, studio bosses have announced.
The feature film, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, is being released by Hollywood studios Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures in partnership with the charity organisation The Film and TV Charity.
According to film industry publication World of Reel, the movie will skip the traditional autumn film festival circuit. Instead, it will make its public debut during the Royal Film Performance in London's Leicester Square.
Cruise stars in the lead role of Digger Rockwell, who is described in the official synopsis as the most powerful man in the world. The storyline follows Rockwell on a desperate mission to prove he is humanity's saviour before damage he personally caused destroys everything.
The project represents the 50th feature film of Cruise's long acting career, with the American actor also serving as a producer. Cruise is best known globally for leading major cinema franchises such as Top Gun and Mission: Impossible.
In a joint statement, Cruise, Iñárritu and the film's producers said it was an honour and privilege to host the world premiere in aid of The Film and TV Charity, praising the UK organization for its vital support of colleagues working across the entertainment industry.
They added that because production and filming took place entirely within the United Kingdom, it was especially meaningful to return to London for the first screening before the British public.
Cast and production team
An ensemble cast surrounds Cruise in the film, including John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Emma D'Arcy.
Iñárritu, the acclaimed Oscar-winning Mexican director behind Birdman and The Revenant, co-wrote the screenplay alongside Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman.
Following its London debut, Digger is expected to premiere in Greek cinemas on October 1, according to news agency APE-MPE.
