Diesel fuel prices in Ukraine crossed the psychological threshold of 100 hryvnias per liter at filling stations over the weekend, according to financial portal Minfin.
The cost of diesel reached exactly 100 hryvnias per liter at stations operated by Neftek, a domestic filling station network. At stations run by Azerbaijani state energy company SOCAR, diesel prices reached 103 hryvnias per liter.
Despite the sharp increases at specific station chains, nationwide average prices for diesel fuel across Ukraine dipped slightly over the weekend. Minfin reported that the national average fell by 13 kopecks, or 0.13 percent, to stand at 98.55 hryvnias per liter.
Minfin is a Ukrainian financial news and market monitoring portal that tracks retail energy costs across the country. The hryvnia is the national currency of Ukraine, with 100 kopecks making up one hryvnia.
Gasoline prices reach record highs
Gasoline prices also experienced upward movement across Ukrainian filling stations, allowing all three major grades to set new price records. The cost increases varied across the different fuel grades.
Grade A-92 gasoline recorded the sharpest rise, jumping by 90 kopecks, or 1.07 percent, to reach an average of 85.16 hryvnias per liter. Premium A-95 gasoline increased by 69 kopecks, or 0.75 percent, rising to an average price of 93.33 hryvnias per liter.
Regular A-95 gasoline added 16 kopecks, or 0.18 percent, reaching an average of 89.15 hryvnias per liter. Automotive liquefied petroleum gas rose by a symbolic 5 kopecks, or 0.11 percent, to an average of 44.14 hryvnias per liter.
Government intervention and global shortages
The weekend price movements follow government efforts to curb rising fuel costs. On September 17, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine requested that retail gas station networks avoid increasing fuel prices to 100 hryvnias or more per liter, hoping that conditions on the international market would improve.
The Cabinet of Ministers serves as the highest executive body in Ukraine, overseeing economic policy and state administration. At the start of the week, market projections had placed the potential retail price of diesel above 102 hryvnias per liter.
The price increases in Ukraine reflect broader pressures on global fuel supplies. Retail diesel prices in the United States continued to rise, passing an average of 6.50 dollars per gallon, or 76.72 hryvnias per liter, for the first time.
The American price increases were driven by the war waged by United States President Donald Trump against Iran. During September alone, US diesel prices climbed by more than 87 cents, or 10.27 hryvnias per liter, as diesel shortages were reported around the world.
