US Treasury Warns of Sanctions Over Iran Bank Transactions

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington will penalize a bank this week for Iran-related transactions while weighing action on Chinese lenders.

US Treasury Warns of Sanctions Over Iran Bank Transactions

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the American administration intends to introduce sanctions against a bank this week over financial transactions connected to Iran.

Speaking in an interview reported by the Associated Press, Bessent emphasized that enforcing the penalty would amount to financial violence against the target institution. He stated that United States officials were sending a direct message to those involved, stressing that authorities knew who they were, that the entities were aware of their own activities, and that such transactions must come to an end.

The United States Department of the Treasury is the executive department responsible for managing federal finances, collecting taxes, and administering international economic sanctions. As head of the department, the Treasury Secretary oversees the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which enforces economic sanctions against foreign governments, financial institutions, and designated entities. Through control over dollar-denominated transactions, Washington exercises significant influence over international banking networks.

Upcoming G20 meeting and stance on Beijing

Bessent also outlined plans to meet with Chinese partners during an upcoming gathering of finance ministers from the Group of 20 nations. He added that Washington is considering all available options regarding potential sanctions against Beijing over its ongoing economic and commercial cooperation with Iran.

The Group of 20, commonly known as the G20, is a premier international forum for economic cooperation comprising nineteen sovereign countries, the European Union, and the African Union. The group represents the world's largest developed and emerging economies, bringing together finance ministers and central bank governors to coordinate policies on global financial stability, international trade, and regulatory standards.

Economic pressure campaign against Iran

The warning comes after United States President Donald Trump acknowledged the possibility of introducing American sanctions against Chinese banks that conduct business with Iran. Trump also announced the beginning of a new crushing economic operation by the United States targeting the Islamic Republic.

The United States has long imposed comprehensive sanctions on Iran, targeting its energy sector, central bank, and external trade networks. Chinese financial institutions and commercial firms have frequently faced scrutiny from Washington due to ongoing trade ties between Beijing and Tehran. Sanctions against foreign banks typically restrict their ability to process transactions through the United States financial system or maintain correspondent accounts with American institutions.

The planned sanctions against the unnamed bank are scheduled for implementation later this week, as United States officials prepare for discussions with Chinese delegates at the G20 summit.
