A 22-year-old tourist who suffered burns in an accident at the Therma thermal baths in Samothrace, Greece, is out of danger, the Municipality of Samothrace said in a social media announcement on August 4, 2026.
The young man fell into an unguarded borehole at the site and suffered severe burns. He is being treated at Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki. A related report said he suffered burns to 38% of his body.
Samothrace Mayor Athanasios Vitsas said he had contacted hospital officials to check on the tourist's condition. He said he had been told the young man's life was not in danger, and that treatment would continue for as long as necessary to complete his recovery.
Investigation into the accident
Vitsas said the circumstances of the accident were being investigated by the relevant authorities. He said the Municipality of Samothrace had cooperated fully with investigators from the start, providing all information that could help the inquiry.
Mayor renews safety call
Vitsas also renewed a call for residents and visitors to the island to observe safety signage, avoid areas where work is underway, and take due care to protect their physical safety.
