A 26-year-old California resident, Adam Iza, has been sentenced by a Connecticut district court to 15 years in prison for participating in the kidnapping of a couple whose son was believed to have stolen hundreds of millions of dollars in bitcoin. Iza was also ordered to serve three years of probation following his release from custody.
The abduction occurred in August 2024 when police in Danbury, Connecticut, intercepted and detained six men from Florida. Authorities suspected the group of carjacking a luxury Lamborghini Urus vehicle while a man and a woman were trapped inside.
Investigators quickly established that the kidnapped victims were the parents of an individual suspected at the time of orchestrating a massive cryptocurrency theft. The perpetrators attempted to hold the parents hostage to force them to hand over a portion of the digital funds stolen by their son.
Nightclub Conflict and Operation Details
According to United States prosecutors, the abduction conspiracy stemmed from a dispute in July 2024. An alleged accomplice of Iza got into a conflict with the victims' son at a nightclub in Miami, Florida.
Prosecutors stated that this accomplice maintained continuous communication with several members of the kidnapping crew, funded the operation, and assisted in organizing accommodation for the attackers. Case filings show that Iza helped coordinate the operation directly, communicating with kidnappers via mobile telephone calls and encrypted messaging applications.
Guilty Pleas and Judicial Custody
Iza has remained in law enforcement custody since September 24, 2024. In June 2026, he pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
His brother, Saif Faiq, also pleaded guilty to similar charges and is currently awaiting sentencing. All six men apprehended during the Danbury Lamborghini carjacking and kidnapping have likewise entered guilty pleas in court.
Global Surge in Crypto Kidnappings
The Connecticut case highlights a broader international pattern of physical extortion aimed at digital asset investors. Last year, law enforcement authorities in Morocco arrested the alleged mastermind of a series of kidnappings targeting French cryptocurrency entrepreneurs and their family members.
French government officials had previously pledged to strengthen security measures and executive protection for crypto entrepreneurs following a sharp increase in ransom-motivated violent crimes targeting industry figures.

Danbury, where the initial arrests took place, is a city in Fairfield County in southwestern Connecticut. The vehicle used during the abduction, the Lamborghini Urus, is a high-performance luxury sport utility vehicle produced by Italian automaker Lamborghini.
Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin operate on decentralized blockchain ledgers, allowing substantial wealth to be stored in digital wallets. As digital asset valuations have risen, international law enforcement agencies have warned of a growing wave of targeted physical abductions designed to extort wallet credentials and private keys from asset holders and their relatives.
