A Brazilian field hospital deployed to assist victims of a deadly earthquake in Venezuela could receive Level 2 classification of excellence from the United Nations, Brazilian officials announced on Friday.
Brazil's Ministry of External Relations confirmed the official request during the Second International Seminar on Humanitarian Operations and Disaster Response, held on Ilha do Governador in Rio de Janeiro.
The Level 2 classification indicates that a health unit meets international standards established by the United Nations for healthcare service provision during emergency situations. The application was submitted by Brazil's foreign ministry and is currently awaiting a formal decision from the global body.
Disaster operations seminar in Rio de Janeiro
Participants at the Friday event were able to inspect the structure and operational dynamics of the field hospital, which was set up in La Guaira after a powerful earthquake caused widespread destruction in Venezuela.
Organisers designed the seminar to explore strategies for improving Brazil's capability to respond to land-based disasters. The gathering focused on strengthening operational methods across future international humanitarian relief missions.
Diplomatic response to humanitarian tragedy
The medical deployment followed two of the largest earthquakes to strike northern Venezuela in more than a century, which hit the coastal region in June. The disaster resulted in more than 6,000 fatalities, including two Brazilian citizens.
During the relief operations, Ambassador Glivânia Maria de Oliveira praised the dedication and technical standard of the Brazilian teams. Speaking to CNN Brasil at the time, she said authorities were dealing with an ongoing emergency and a major humanitarian tragedy, noting that Brazil remained vigilant across multiple fronts to meet urgent local needs.
Medical facilities and emergency aid capacity
To reinforce assistance efforts in Venezuela, the Brazilian Air Force dispatched four military transport aircraft loaded with essential supplies and medical equipment.
The temporary facility operating in the coastal city of La Guaira was equipped with 30 patient beds, surgical capabilities, emergency care units, a specialized pediatric module, and resources for pandemic preparedness.
Along with the mobile hospital, Brazilian relief shipments contained more than 100 water purification units and 12.5 tonnes of aid items, including medicines, vaccines, and health supplies.
