High voter support for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva forms the main obstacle to any third-way candidate in Brazil's 2026 presidential election, according to political analysis firm Arko Advice.
Cristiano Noronha, vice president of Arko Advice, said during an appearance on the political commentary show WW that alternative contenders face tremendous difficulty establishing a meaningful presence with the electorate. He explained that roughly 80 per cent of voters who support either Lula or Bolsonaro show no willingness to change their minds.
Noronha noted that other politicians entering the public debate have focused on more proactive policy proposals. This effort stems in part from their lack of involvement in major political scandals, such as the ongoing investigation into Brazil's National Social Security Institute, known as the INSS.
Lula, who represents the left-wing Workers' Party, is serving his third term as president. Senator Bolsonaro represents the right-wing Liberal Party for Rio de Janeiro and is the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. In Brazilian politics, the term third way refers to centrist or alternative candidacies seeking to break the polarization between the two dominant political camps.
Voter loyalty blocks alternative campaigns
Despite securing visibility through media interviews, alternative campaigns are being effectively drained of momentum by the established voter blocks. Noronha stated that the high degree of voter consolidation around the two leading figures directly prevents a third option from emerging.
As a result, several alternative candidates appear to be preparing for the 2030 presidential contest rather than focusing realistically on 2026. According to Noronha, Renan Santos of the Missão party is primarily focused on raising his public profile, expanding his party organization, and winning a larger caucus in Congress. The party currently holds only one seat in the lower house Chamber of Deputies, occupied by Kim Kataguiri.
Long-term strategy for party building
Noronha described Romeu Zema of the Social Democratic Party as the candidate who appears most out of place among the alternative contenders. However, Noronha noted that Zema is expected to insist on his candidacy to benefit his party. In recent media interviews, Zema has frequently cited names of candidates from the Novo party, signaling an effort to strengthen the political brand.
Noronha concluded that alternative candidates understand the immense difficulty of their position and recognize that overcoming the barrier set by Flávio Bolsonaro and Lula is an arduous task. He added that the current political landscape is unlikely to change significantly before a potential second-round run-off vote in the presidential election.
