Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori will attend a reception hosted by United States President Donald Trump if the Peruvian Senate approves her official trip to New York in time, she said in an interview with RPP.
Fujimori confirmed the invitation as part of her agenda for the United Nations General Assembly. She said she hoped to have the chance to greet Trump.
What the reception involves
The dinner is a traditional reception that Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, host each year for all heads of delegation taking part in the General Debate of the UN General Assembly. It is not a private or bilateral dinner but a protocol event attended by dozens of heads of state and government.
This year's reception is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, at 7:00 p.m., according to the official presidential agenda document reviewed by La República.
Senate approval still pending
For Fujimori to travel, the Senate must first approve a draft legislative resolution submitted this week by the executive branch. The document was delivered by Fujimori herself, alongside Cabinet Chief Luis Galarreta, and still has to go before the full Senate floor.
If the permit does not arrive in time, the president will not be able to travel and, as a result, will not attend the Trump reception.
The trip is scheduled for September 21 to 25. During that period, Fujimori is expected to take part in the UN General Debate, hold bilateral meetings with other heads of state, and attend various business forums in the United States. While she is away, the presidential office will be run by Galarreta, who also serves as First Vice President of Peru.
Other engagements on the international agenda
Before the reception with the Trumps, Fujimori has a meeting scheduled with the Secretary-General of the United Nations. That meeting will take place the same day, Tuesday, September 22, at 2:20 p.m., according to the official itinerary. The UN Secretary-General is the organization's chief administrative officer, and such meetings typically address a country's role within the multilateral system and its national priorities.
The purpose of the meeting is to reaffirm Peru's commitment to the multilateral system and to raise matters of national interest before one of the world's most important international bodies.
The following day, Wednesday, September 23, Fujimori will chair a business meeting in Miami organized by the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom at Florida International University and the Consejo Empresarial Alianza por Iberoamérica (CEAPI), a business council promoting ties between Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
About 80 Ibero-American business people are expected to attend. According to the official document, the goal is to present Peru as an investment platform, citing its geographic location and trade agreements with various markets.
