Greek President Tasoulas to Meet Lebanon President Aoun

Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas will meet with Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun at the Presidential Mansion in Athens on Monday, August 31, at 11:30 am.

The meeting at the official residence of the Greek head of state will bring together leaders from both Mediterranean nations for bilateral discussions.

Tasoulas serves as the President of the Hellenic Republic, conducting official diplomatic ceremonies from the historic Presidential Mansion in central Athens. General Joseph Aoun holds the presidency of the Republic of Lebanon, a Middle Eastern country situated along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

The upcoming diplomatic talks coincide with heightened political debate in Greece, where the government and opposition factions clashed over the candidacy of lawmaker Elena Akrita for the position of fifth vice president of the Hellenic Parliament.

The main opposition party, SYRIZA, officially proposed Akrita for the parliamentary leadership role, drawing opposition from ruling party officials in the 300-seat national assembly.

The Hellenic Parliament, located at Syntagma Square in Athens, operates as the unicameral legislature of Greece, where vice presidents are elected to preside over parliamentary sessions and govern legislative proceedings.

In a separate political development, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed regional concerns during an official tour of Western Macedonia, which included a visit to the town of Ptolemaida.

Mitsotakis said that reality disproved claims asserting that the Public Power Corporation planned to withdraw its operations and presence from the Western Macedonia region.

Western Macedonia has historically served as the primary energy generation hub of Greece, with Ptolemaida functioning as a major industrial center for power generation operated by the Public Power Corporation, the nation's dominant electricity provider.

Political tensions further extended to governance procedures inside the legislature, where Kostas Tsoukalas publicly denounced the ruling New Democracy party.

Tsoukalas accused New Democracy of blatantly attempting to reinforce its majority within the Conference of Presidents, asserting that the move violated established democratic principles.

The Conference of Presidents is a senior cross-party committee in the Greek parliament responsible for determining the legislative schedule, organizing parliamentary debates, and selecting candidates for independent regulatory bodies.

Responding to political criticism, Mitsotakis maintained that New Democracy remains the sole political force capable of guaranteeing stability and economic progress for Greece.

New Democracy currently forms the governing party of Greece under Mitsotakis, who has led the center-right administration since winning national parliamentary elections.
