Iga Swiatek has reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati after defeating France's Diane Parry 6-3 6-3 in their last-16 match.
The Polish star, who arrived in Ohio fresh from winning the WTA 1000 title in Toronto, is defending the Cincinnati title she won a year ago as top players finalize their preparations for the upcoming US Open in New York.
The encounter against Parry got off to an unexpected start when the French player broke Swiatek's serve in the opening game. However, the top seed responded immediately by breaking back in the following game and went on to claim the first set 6-3 without further major difficulty.
Swiatek established a double-break lead in the second set. Although Parry managed to retrieve one of the breaks, Swiatek maintained control to close out the set 6-3 and seal her victory in under an hour and a half.
Her progress to the last eight in Cincinnati followed an opening-round victory over Colombia's Emiliana Arango and a three-set win against Maria Sakkari of Greece in the second round.
Global media praise Swiatek consistency
Swiatek's latest win marks her ninth consecutive match victory across her North American hard-court swing following her title success in Canada. Sports media outlets around the world highlighted her form as she continues her build-up to the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
Writing for tennis website tennistemple.com, reporter Jules Hypolite noted that Swiatek recorded another success and experienced no trouble resolving the contest in under 90 minutes. Meanwhile, American network ESPN described her recent run as Swiatek's nine wonders in North America, praising her fantastic consistency in Cincinnati.
Tennis news portal tennisuptodate.com reported that the defending champion recorded a comfortable victory, noting that she has now reached four consecutive quarter-finals at the Cincinnati event.
French sports daily L'Equipe observed that Parry started well by securing the early break and finished strongly by saving three match points. However, the Paris-based publication added that Swiatek played with too much consistency and composure for the Frenchwoman to mount a comeback.
Quarter-final milestone statistics
Polish outlet SportyTV offered a slightly more reserved assessment, reporting that Swiatek won despite not being in her absolute best form, a commentary reflecting her overall performance throughout the season. Nevertheless, the outlet cited statistics crowning the native of Raszyn as the queen of quarter-finals.
Swiatek has now reached 30 quarter-finals at the WTA 1000 level in just 48 main-draw appearances. The WTA 1000 tier represents the most prestigious category of women's tennis tournaments outside the four Grand Slams. Only two players in tennis history have reached 30 quarter-finals at this level faster: 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who needed 45 appearances, and former world number two Agnieszka Radwanska, who achieved it in 46.
Furthermore, Swiatek is the fourth-youngest player to reach 30 Tier I or WTA 1000 quarter-finals since the format was introduced in 1990. She trails only former world number ones Martina Hingis, Radwanska, and Maria Sharapova on that all-time list.
Potential rematch with Rybakina
Swiatek will face either Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan or Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals. If Rybakina advances, the matchup will set up a direct rematch of their recent final at the WTA 1000 event in Toronto.
Tennis website tennisworldusa.org highlighted the approaching clash, noting that a quarter-final battle between Swiatek and Rybakina in Cincinnati would be an absolute pleasure for tennis fans.
SportyTV added that facing Rybakina in the next round will demonstrate where Swiatek currently stands, provided the Kazakh player first overcomes Shnaider in her remaining match.
