Iga Swiatek will face French player Diane Parry in the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open after defeating Maria Sakkari on Monday. Swiatek was guaranteed to face an opponent from France after overcoming her Greek rival 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the previous round.
Parry, the world number 66, secured her spot in the last 16 by beating 22-year-old compatriot Lois Boisson 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The 23-year-old recovered from dropping the first set to earn a clash against former world number one Swiatek.
Swiatek comes into the match carrying strong momentum after winning the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. Although she encountered mid-match difficulties against Sakkari on Monday, the Polish star recovered to dominate the final two sets and advance.
Parry's victory over Boisson, who is ranked 281st in the world, sets up another meeting between Parry and a Polish player. Parry is an old acquaintance for Polish fans, having lost in straight sets to Maja Chwalinska at Roland Garros earlier this season.
Parry's record against top opponents
Despite her loss to Chwalinska in Paris, Parry has demonstrated an ability to trouble higher-ranked competitors throughout the season. In Cincinnati, she launched her campaign by sending 22nd-ranked Elise Mertens home with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The Frenchwoman also produced a major result at Roland Garros, where she eliminated top American competitor Amanda Anisimova. During Wimbledon, Parry pushed Anna Kalinskaya in a tight battle that went almost three full sets before being decided in a final-set tie-break.
Previous head-to-head match
Swiatek and Parry have met once before in their careers. That encounter took place two years ago at the Olympic Games, where Swiatek secured a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The Cincinnati Open is a major WTA 1000 tournament played on hard courts in the United States, serving as a key event ahead of the US Open. Swiatek will aim to replicate her Olympic result when she faces Parry for a place in the quarter-finals.
