Spanish Medical Union Accuses Health Ministry of Spin

Spanish Medical Union Accuses Health Ministry of Spin

Spain's Confederation of Medical Unions has accused the Ministry of Health's communication office of releasing selective data to create a false narrative about national healthcare conditions.

Union representative Victor Pedrera Carbonell stated that official communications from the ministry present a far more favorable picture of the public health system than the reality daily experienced by medical staff and patients.

Writing on behalf of the medical union, Pedrera Carbonell targeted the ministry's communication cabinet, led by Luis Gimenez San Miguel. He said the office focuses its efforts on constructing a government-friendly storyline rather than providing complete and transparent information.

According to the union, the ministry frequently cites isolated statistics that may be factually correct while hiding systemic problems. These include long waiting lists, severe staffing shortages, heavy care workloads, and difficulties in filling specific medical posts across the public health system.

Healthcare crisis in Ceuta

The union highlighted the ongoing medical crisis in the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta as a clear example of official spin masking severe operational failures.

Pedrera Carbonell noted that healthcare problems in Ceuta did not start after recent border incidents and are not a new phenomenon. He stated that the union has spent years warning authorities about deteriorating medical services in the city without receiving a proper response.

The Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions, known as CESM, represents doctors and healthcare professionals across Spain. The national Ministry of Health oversees public health guidelines, while administrative communication is handled by its dedicated press office under Gimenez San Miguel and the health minister.

Call for transparency and solutions

Pedrera Carbonell warned that selecting partial data and stripping away context threatens institutional credibility. He added that growing detachment among doctors is spreading as healthcare workers face increasing demands from a strained medical infrastructure.

The union representative concluded that healthcare problems will not disappear through favorable press releases or propaganda. He called on the Ministry of Health to acknowledge the true state of public medicine and deliver concrete solutions to support medical staff and patients.
