Australian prospector David Hole discovered a heavy 17-kilogram rock in Maryborough, Victoria, that laboratory tests later confirmed to be a 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite.
Hole found the unusual reddish stone in an area of yellow clay in 2015 while searching for gold using a metal detector. Convinced that the dense object was a massive gold nugget, he took it home.
For years, Hole tried repeatedly to crack open the specimen to reach what he believed was precious metal inside. He used a rock saw, an angle grinder, a drill, acid, and even a hammer, but the rock remained intact before being left forgotten on a shelf.
The town of Maryborough is located in the Goldfields region of Victoria, Australia, an area famous for major nineteenth-century gold discoveries that continue to attract prospectors.
Hole eventually took the rock to Museums Victoria in Melbourne to be examined by geologists Bill Birch and Dermot Henry. The scientists suspected its extraterrestrial origin after observing outer dimples and surface markings created as the object heated and deformed while passing through the atmosphere.
Scientific Analysis of the Maryborough Meteorite
Museums Victoria registered the 39-centimeter specimen under the official name Maryborough. Henry explained that the outer crust formed as the body partially melted and was sculpted by the atmosphere during entry.

Classification tests identified the specimen as an H5 ordinary chondrite containing tiny crystallized structures called chondrules, which formed from dust in the primitive Solar System. Birch noted that if a person saw a rock like that on Earth, it should not weigh so much.
Chondrites are primitive stony meteorites that represent some of the oldest solid materials in the Solar System, offering researchers a record of early planetary formation.
A scientific paper on the Maryborough meteorite estimated its formation age at approximately 4.6 billion years, matching the origin of the Solar System. Authors of the study believe the rock originated in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter before an impact altered its trajectory, sending it toward Earth between 100 and 1,000 years ago.
Importance for Space Research
The discovery serves as a reminder that geological phenomena can carry histories from far beyond terrestrial mines, much like volcanoes known to expel gold. Researchers noted that such extraterrestrial materials could also provide resources for future space missions.
The Maryborough specimen is one of only 17 meteorites ever registered in Victoria. It represents the second largest chondritic mass found in the region, behind a 55-kilogram specimen.
Henry explained that meteorites offer the cheapest way to explore space because their composition preserves vital information about the age, formation, and chemistry of their environment of origin, comparing the data to NASA's scientific library.
Although Hole did not find the gold nugget he expected, scientists emphasized that identifying specimens before cutting or discarding them is crucial, as an ordinary-looking rock can reveal extraordinary cosmic history.
