State broadcaster Radio Televisión Dominicana reached more than 8.2 million viewers in the Dominican Republic during the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.

An executive audience report by media analysis firm Media Express revealed that the public television channel achieved an estimated net audience of 8.22 million people. The coverage captured an 80 percent audience share among all television channels broadcasting the regional sporting event, establishing the station as the primary signal across the nation.

Radio Televisión Dominicana, headquartered in Santo Domingo, is the state-owned public broadcaster of the Dominican Republic. The 2026 edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games took place over 15 days in the capital city of Santo Domingo, bringing together athletes from across Central America and the Caribbean before concluding with a closing concert by musician Juan Luis Guerra.

During the fortnight of competition, the state network provided dedicated programming that highlighted key sports, tracking the performances of Dominican athletes and broadcasting major moments directly into homes across the country.

Dominant sports and regional viewership

Volleyball and athletics emerged as the most popular disciplines on the network, accounting for 40 percent and 39 percent of sports viewership respectively. Together, the two sports generated 79 percent of the channel's total sports audience share throughout the broadcast period.

Viewership figures showed broad geographic distribution across the Dominican Republic. The Gran Santo Domingo metropolitan area accounted for the largest share at 37 percent of the audience, while the northern Cibao region closely followed with 35 percent. The southern region generated 16 percent of viewers, and the eastern region represented 12 percent.

Demographic data indicated that the broadcasts appealed across generational lines. Viewers aged 35 and older comprised 55 percent of the total audience, while people under the age of 35 accounted for the remaining 45 percent, reflecting strong family engagement with the coverage.

Executive reaction and public support

Iván Ruiz, the general director of Radio Televisión Dominicana and a veteran television producer, welcomed the audience findings as evidence of strong public backing for national sporting events. Ruiz said that the 8.2 million viewers represented 8.2 million thank-yous from the network management team.

Ruiz noted that behind the viewership statistics were thousands of Dominican families who gathered around television screens to celebrate victories and support national competitors. He stated that the network felt proud of the results and deeply grateful to families, parents, young people, and grandparents who followed the national delegation.

The director general emphasized that public television plays a vital role in reflecting national identity and unifying citizens. He stated that the station accepted the audience figures with humility and a strong sense of responsibility after being welcomed into homes across the country.

Future goals for state broadcasting

Ruiz expressed gratitude to viewers who cheered each win and shared in every defeat throughout the 15-day tournament. He added that the public's response commits the network to delivering accessible public television that highlights Dominican achievements.

Management at the state network indicated that the audience success during the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games will encourage further investment in sports coverage and national interest programming. Ruiz concluded that the viewing figures provide both a major responsibility and clear motivation to continue serving the Dominican public.
