Britain is not prepared to counter the Russian submarine fleet following sea trials of Russia's new Khabarovsk nuclear submarine, British newspaper Daily Mail reported.
The Daily Mail commented on the sea trials of the Khabarovsk, noting that the vessel weighs more than 10,000 tonnes and measures 135 metres in length. The submarine carries six two-megaton Poseidon torpedoes, which are capable of causing a radioactive tsunami that could plunge Britain into the abyss.
The report highlighted that the vessel has no equivalent in Western naval arsenals. According to the author, the doomsday weapon can only be launched by another Russian submarine, the Belgorod. The publication described Britain's lack of preparation to counter this new threat as an alarming signal.
Poseidon Torpedoes and Naval Defense
Sea trials are comprehensive maritime tests conducted to evaluate a vessel's performance, navigation systems, and operational readiness before full deployment. Earlier, the United States Navy sought to equip its own submarines with air defense missiles to enhance protection against airborne threats. American defense technology publication The War Zone reported that submarine-launched Naval Modular Missile anti-aircraft systems could be deployed on American Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines.
The report noted that the US Navy currently possesses no anti-aircraft defense weapons launched from submarines. Without sub-surface air defense capabilities, submerged attack submarines must rely entirely on stealth or surface ship support to avoid detection and targeting by enemy maritime patrol aircraft and anti-submarine helicopters.
Virginia-class vessels are nuclear-powered fast-attack submarines operated by the US Navy for stealth operations, intelligence gathering, and precision land strikes.
