Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on August 20, 2026, that a massive Russian missile and drone attack killed 13 people and injured around 40 others in Kyiv and the surrounding region.
According to figures provided by local authorities, at least 12 of the fatalities occurred within the capital city of Kyiv, while one resident was killed in the wider Kyiv region. Rescuers, medical personnel, police, and municipal staff responded immediately to assist victims across the impacted areas.

Zelenskyy stated that the Russian assault combined various types of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and uncrewed aerial vehicles designed to cause maximum damage to civilian infrastructure. In the southern Odesa region, Russian drones struck a border crossing point along the border with Moldova, while strikes targeted gas infrastructure facilities in the northern Chernihiv region.
Data released by the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russian forces launched ballistic missiles, 44 missiles of other types, and 168 drones during overnight operations. Ukrainian air defense units intercepted 39 cruise missiles, 145 drones, and two Banderol loitering munitions intended for low-altitude strikes.
The MIM-104 Patriot is an American-made surface-to-air missile defense system used by Ukraine to defend cities and critical infrastructure against advanced air strikes. Since the onset of full-scale hostilities, Ukraine has relied heavily on Western-supplied air defense batteries to protect major urban centers like Kyiv from heavy aerial bombardments.

Air Defense Demands and Diplomacy
Addressing the international response to the latest strike, Zelenskyy remarked that while Moscow continues to invest heavily in ballistic weaponry and military escalation, global reactions to such strikes are not always proportional. He emphasized that Russia will not be inclined toward peace until Ukraine possesses sufficient capability to counter ballistic strikes effectively.
Zelenskyy explained that there is currently no alternative to Patriot interceptor missiles, which are needed on a daily basis to protect Ukrainian lives. He noted that while work proceeds daily on Ukraine's FREYJA defense initiative, every additional interceptor missile directly safeguards civilian lives, expressing gratitude to international partners working to procure defensive supplies.
